Towing an RV or trailer
Two different questions live under one heading: what your vehicle can pull, and what vehicle can go behind an RV with all four wheels down. The second is decided by the towed vehicle's manual, not the RV, and getting it wrong destroys transmissions.
Conventional, fifth-wheel and gooseneck
Tongue weight runs 10–15% of loaded trailer weight for a conventional bumper-pull, and 15–25% for a fifth-wheel or gooseneck. Tongue weight counts against payload, not only against the tow rating.
A fifth-wheel places the load over the rear axle rather than behind it, which improves stability and explains the higher range. A conventional hitch hangs the load behind the axle, which is why it is more sensitive to sway and to how the trailer is loaded.
How you load it decides how it behaves
Roughly 60% of the weight goes ahead of the trailer axle. Loading rearward reduces tongue weight and produces the classic highway-speed sway, which is not fixed by a bigger hitch but by redistributing the load. Secure everything: a load that shifts changes the balance while you are moving.
Trailer brakes and the rule that varies by state
Most states require trailer brakes above a threshold weight, but the threshold ranges from "all trailers" to over 3,000 lb and changes by legislative session. We do not publish a state-by-state table because the ones you will find elsewhere are almost always stale — verify with your own state before you travel.
Flat-towing behind an RV
This is where transmissions break. Whether a vehicle can be towed with all four wheels down is decided by its own manual, and the answer is model- and year-specific.
- All-wheel drive: flatbed only under most manufacturers. Towing with two wheels down spins one axle against another that is stationary or turning at a different rate, which overheats and shears transfer case or center differential clutches. Damage can happen within a few miles and may not surface for days.
- Four-wheel drive: some permit two wheels down only with the transfer case in Neutral or the driveshaft removed. This is model-specific and must never be generalized — check the manual for your exact vehicle and year.
An automatic transmission is lubricated by a pump driven by the engine. With the engine off that pump is not turning, so the gearset can spin without oil. Neutral disconnects drive; it does not restore lubrication.

The setup that prevents most incidents
Before every trip: cold tyre pressures including the trailer and the spare, because a trailer parked for months loses pressure and an underinflated tyre is the most common cause of a blowout; lights and brakes tested with someone watching from behind; chains crossed under the tongue so they cradle it if it drops; and the breakaway cable attached to the vehicle, not to the chain.
Trailer wheel nuts loosen during initial use. Re-check them after the first 50 miles of each season — a two-minute check that prevents losing a wheel at highway speed.
Driving with a trailer is a different task
Everything takes longer and more room: braking distance, overtaking, accelerating onto a carriageway. Leave far more space than feels necessary and take corners wider, because the trailer cuts inside your line and will climb a kerb.
If sway starts, do not brake hard and do not accelerate to "pull it straight": ease off the throttle, keep the wheel straight, and if you have a manual trailer-brake controller apply it gently so the trailer pulls back into line. Then check load distribution at the next stop, because sway is almost always badly distributed weight rather than a hitch fault.
