Winch-out recovery
A winch-out pulls a vehicle back onto the roadway from mud, snow, sand or a ditch.
What to expect and how it is billed
It is billed separately from the tow and usually by time. The rigging is where the danger is: a tow strap used for a snatch recovery is a leading cause of strap failure and fatal projectile injuries, and a side-loaded shackle is far weaker than its stamped rating.
How to avoid being overcharged
Get the numbers before the unit is dispatched: base fee, per-mile charge where it applies, and any surcharge for hours or difficulty. Ask for an itemised receipt. If the tow was non-consensual — police-ordered or from private property — your state or city may publish a cap, and the operator should be able to tell you which schedule it is billing under.
