Can you rent a tow truck?

By Ray Delgado — Tow operator, 16 years Last reviewed: R1

Usually not with an ordinary rental car. Most consumer rental agreements prohibit towing outright, and doing it anyway voids the damage waiver and leaves you personally liable. The exception is a truck rented specifically for towing from a company that supplies the hitch and its own trailer — that is a different product with its own rules.

Short version

  • Most consumer rental agreements prohibit towing with the vehicle.
  • Towing anyway typically voids the damage waiver and your own coverage may not step in.
  • A truck rented for towing usually must use that company's hitch and trailer.
  • A factory hitch on the vehicle does not mean the contract permits using it.

The clause that decides it

Rental agreements carry a prohibited-use section, and towing is almost always in it alongside off-road driving and unauthorised drivers. The consequence is not a fine: it is that the collision damage waiver you bought stops applying, so damage to the rental becomes yours in full. Your personal auto policy may also decline, because it commonly excludes use that breaches a rental contract. Read that section before assuming a hitch means permission.

The one arrangement that does work

Renting a truck specifically to tow is a different product. Companies that offer it supply the hitch, rent you their own trailer, and match the two — which is how they manage the liability. The trade-off is that you generally cannot bring your own trailer, and the vehicle they give you is chosen for the load rather than by you. That is the arrangement to ask for, rather than trying to tow with a car you rented for other reasons.

A borrowed vehicle is an insurance question

With a friend's truck the contract problem disappears and an insurance one replaces it. Coverage generally follows the vehicle, so their policy is primary and their premium absorbs a claim. Confirm they know you are towing, and confirm what the vehicle can actually pull — the owner rarely knows the payload figure, and tongue weight lands on payload before anything else.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a factory hitch as permission — the contract governs, not the hardware.
  • Assuming your own insurance backstops a rental you towed with — policies commonly exclude use that breaches the rental agreement.
