Heavy-duty recovery

There is no authoritative tonnage threshold separating heavy recovery from light-duty work. The industry frames the distinction through training and equipment rather than weight, which is why we describe it that way here instead of citing a figure nobody publishes.

The equipment defines the work

A rotator swings its boom off the truck's axis, which allows an angled lift from a safe position — the tool for a rollover or a vehicle off the carriageway. A landoll with a sliding axle drops the deck to the ground to load machinery that will not roll. Neither is a "bigger" version of a light-duty truck; they solve different problems.

Rigging is where the risk is

Working load limit is breaking strength divided by a safety factor, commonly 4:1 or 5:1. Side-loading a shackle or tip-loading a hook drastically reduces its rated capacity — the number stamped on the part assumes a straight, in-line pull.

Tow straps and kinetic recovery straps are not interchangeable, and treating them as if they were is a leading cause of strap failure and fatal projectile injuries.

A tow strap is low-stretch and is for slow, steady pulls. A kinetic recovery strap is engineered to stretch 20–30% so it absorbs and returns snatch energy. Using a tow strap for a kinetic recovery loads it far beyond design and turns the hardware into a projectile.

Training as the common vocabulary

TRAA and WreckMaster both run tiered certification, and those levels are the closest thing to a shared language for what an operator is qualified to attempt. When someone says "heavy recovery", the useful question is which level and which equipment — not how many tons.
